Who asks for 20 KB
20 KB is the usual ceiling for a signature. IBPS and SBI recruitment forms want the signature between 10 and 20 KB, and the SSC CHSL 2026 notice gives the same 10 to 20 KB range. The Protean (NSDL) PAN application caps the photo at 20 KB and the signature at 10 KB.
For some forms, 20 KB is the minimum rather than the maximum: IBPS asks for a photo between 20 and 50 KB. A file under 20 KB is rejected there just like one over 50 KB. Read the notice for your form, or see our guide to exam photo and signature sizes, which links each official notice.
What a 20 KB image looks like
A phone photo is usually 2 to 5 MB, so 20 KB is a hundred times smaller or more. That still works for the job a form needs, because portals show the image small. IBPS, for example, wants a 200 × 230 pixel photo, and at that size a face fits in 20 KB at good JPEG quality.
The tool lowers the JPEG quality first and keeps the full width. If even low quality is over 20 KB, it scales the image down, only as far as needed. A full-size phone photo usually ends up a few hundred pixels wide. Signatures are easier: they are mostly white paper, so they reach 20 KB with little visible loss.
Tips for a sharp 20 KB file
- Crop first. Cut a photo to head and shoulders, and a signature to the ink with a little white around it, using Crop image. Every pixel you remove is detail the 20 KB can spend on what matters.
- Sign on plain white paper in dark ink, and photograph it in daylight. Grey shadows and paper texture take up space.
- Need a minimum too? Exam photo resizer lands a file between a minimum and a maximum, for example 10 to 20 KB, at the exact pixel size a notice gives.
- Keep your original. Compress a fresh copy each time; squeezing an already-compressed JPEG again loses more detail.
Your images stay on your device
Most online compressors upload your photo to their servers. Here, every image is decoded and saved as a smaller JPEG inside this browser tab, using your browser’s own image tools. That matters when it’s your passport photo, your signature, or a scan of your Aadhaar, PAN card or marksheet.
The page’s security policy tells your browser to block uploads, so your images can’t leave your device even by accident. You can check: open your browser’s developer tools, watch the Network tab, and compress a photo. How InTheTab works

Questions
How do I compress a photo to 20 KB?
Pick the photo above with 20 KB selected. The page saves a JPEG just under 20 KB at the highest quality that fits, and you download it. Crop the photo first if the form only needs your face, and the result will be sharper.
How do I reduce my signature size to 20 KB?
Sign in dark ink on plain white paper, take a photo in good light, crop it close to the signature and compress it here at 20 KB. Signatures are mostly white, so they usually look clean at that size.
Why does my 20 KB photo look blurry?
The photo has too many pixels for 20 KB, so it had to be scaled down a lot. Crop closer, or resize it to the pixel size the form asks for, then compress again.
Is 20 KB counted as 20,000 or 20,480 bytes?
Portals differ, so the tool uses the stricter 20,000 bytes. A file it makes under 20 KB passes a form that counts either way.
