How to Resize RC, Licence and Photos for Parivahan and RTO Forms

Parivahan’s licence (Sarathi) and vehicle (Vahan) services accept photos and signatures only as small JPEG files, and documents as a single JPEG or PDF under the size shown on the form. Compress documents with Compress PDF, then crop and resize your photo and signature until they are under the KB limit.

What Parivahan asks for

Parivahan runs two separate systems. Sarathi handles learner’s licences, driving licences, renewals and duplicates. Vahan handles vehicles: RC transfer, duplicate RC, change of address, hypothecation, fitness and permits. Both ask you to upload two kinds of file:

The exact numbers are not published in one official place, and many services are customised by each state. The upload page shows the limit next to each field, so treat that as the rule and the table below as a guide.

Typical upload limits

Commonly seen limits. Always check the limit shown on your form.
FileFormatCommonly seen sizeDimensions
Photo (licence)JPEG10–20 KBabout 420 × 525 px (3.5 × 4.5 cm)
Signature (licence)JPEG10–20 KBabout 256 × 64 px, wide
Documents (RC, licence, proofs, Form 1A)One PDF or JPEGa few hundred KB, often 200–500 KBnone fixed; must be readable

The JPEG and single-file rules come from Parivahan’s document upload FAQ. The sizes are what applicants and help sites commonly report, not an official figure, and they vary by state and service.

Documents: get the PDF under the limit

A scan of an RC or licence card is usually small. The trouble starts with phone photos of documents and multi-page proofs, which easily reach several MB.

From phone photos

If you photographed your RC or address proof, turn the photos into one PDF with JPG to PDF. Choose A4 with a small margin. Photograph each page flat, in daylight, with the page filling the frame; a dark table around the page only adds weight.

Several pages, one upload field

Parivahan takes one file per field. If your address proof is two pages, or the front and back of a card are separate files, join them with Merge PDF first. Then compress the result, because the limit applies to the whole file.

Compress it

Open Compress PDF, start with Balanced, and check the size it reports against the limit on the form. Go to Strong only if you are still over. Zoom in on the result: the registration number, chassis number, dates and stamps must stay readable, or the RTO may reject it at scrutiny.

For vehicle work the same document comes up again and again: RC, insurance, PUC, fitness certificate and permit. Fleet operators such as Orbitmiles, a Pune EV cab operator, go through these uploads for every vehicle at each renewal. If that is you, keep one compressed, readable copy of each document per vehicle so you are not redoing the work every time.

Photo and signature: crop, then resize

A phone photo is a few MB, and the form wants about 20 KB. You get there in two steps: crop to the right shape, then make it smaller in pixels and quality.

1. Crop to the right shape

Open your photo in Crop image. For the photo, choose Free or Portrait 4:5 and frame your head and shoulders against a plain, light background, like a passport photo. For the signature, sign in dark ink on white paper, photograph it, choose Free and crop tightly around the signature so there is little empty paper left. Save as JPEG.

2. Resize under the KB limit

Open the cropped image in Resize image and pick JPEG, because Sarathi wants JPEG files. Then:

  1. Type a max width: around 420 px for the photo or 256 px for the signature, or whatever the form asks for. The height follows, so nothing is stretched.
  2. Convert and check the size in KB below the result.
  3. Still over the limit? Lower the quality a step at a time and convert again. If the face turns blocky before the size fits, lower the width a little instead.

Signatures shrink easily because they are mostly white. Photos are harder, so keep the background plain: a busy background costs KB you would rather spend on your face.

Why do it in the browser

These are identity documents. A licence or RC scan plus a photo and signature is exactly what someone needs to impersonate you or your vehicle’s owner. Most “free compressor” sites upload your file to their servers, where you can’t check how long it stays. InTheTab’s tools run inside your browser tab, so your files are never uploaded; the only upload is the one you make to Parivahan. Our guide on whether it is safe to upload PDFs online explains what to look for in any site.

Troubleshooting

Questions

What size should my photo and signature be for Sarathi?

Use the size shown on the upload page for your state. Photos and signatures must be JPEG, and the limit most people report is 10 to 20 KB each. A photo around 420 × 525 pixels and a signature around 256 × 64 pixels usually fit.

Can I upload a document with several pages?

Yes, as one file. Parivahan asks for a single JPEG or PDF within the given size, so merge the pages into one PDF and compress it until it fits.

My photo looks blurry at 20 KB. Will it be rejected?

A little softness is normal at such a small size. What matters is that your face is clear and evenly lit. Crop closer so the face fills more of the frame, then lower the quality only as far as you need.

Is it safe to use an online compressor for my licence or RC?

Most online compressors upload your file to their server. InTheTab works inside your browser tab, so your RC, licence and photo are never uploaded to us or anyone else. Only the final file goes to Parivahan.
