When you need a PDF under 500 KB
500 KB limits tend to apply to longer documents: a set of semester marksheets, a few months of bank statements, an experience letter with annexures, or a scanned agreement. Portals that expect several pages in one upload, such as job, bank and admission forms, often allow around this much.
As always, the limit on your form is the one that counts. Some fields on the same portal allow less.
What to expect at 500 KB
500 KB gives room to keep pages readable. The tool redraws each page as a JPEG, starting at 150 dpi and high quality. It lowers the quality first and the resolution only if needed, and stops at the first setting that fits.
- A handful of scanned pages usually fit at a resolution where text is easy to read.
- Long scans of 20 or more pages may need a low resolution. The tool warns you below 72 dpi; zoom in and check before you submit.
- If the PDF is already under 500 KB, the tool says so and you can upload the original.
- If 500 KB can’t be reached, it shows the smallest size it got, so you know to split the document.
Tips
- Digital signatures do not survive. Pages are rebuilt into a new file, so a digitally signed PDF, such as an e-signed agreement, loses its signature. A handwritten signature in a scan stays visible.
- Links and form fields are dropped for the same reason. Fill in a fillable form and print it to PDF first.
- Still too big? Split it across the upload fields the form offers with Split PDF, or drop pages that are not asked for with Organize PDF.
Your PDF stays on your device
Most online compressors upload your PDF to their servers. Here, every page is rendered and rebuilt inside this browser tab, using the open-source PDF.js and pdf-lib libraries.
The page’s security policy tells your browser to block uploads, so the document can’t leave your device even by accident. You can check: open your browser’s developer tools, watch the Network tab, and compress a file. How InTheTab works
You’ll also see a few small requests to Google Analytics. That’s our visit counter, and it never receives your files. Privacy policy
Questions
How do I compress a PDF to 500 KB?
Pick the PDF above with the 500 KB target selected and press Compress PDF. The tool tries the sharpest settings first and stops at the first one under 500 KB.
How do I reduce a 5 MB PDF to 500 KB?
Pick it here with the 500 KB target. Scanned PDFs usually shrink a lot because each page is redrawn at a sensible resolution. If 500 KB is still out of reach, the tool shows the smallest size it managed.
Is 500 KB counted as 500,000 or 512,000 bytes?
Portals differ, so the tool uses the stricter 500,000 bytes. A file under that passes a form that counts either way.
Will my digitally signed PDF stay signed?
No. Compressing rebuilds the pages into a new file, so a digital signature is removed. Upload the original if the portal needs the signature, or ask whether a smaller scan is acceptable.
