How to number PDF pages
- Choose your PDF. Click the box above and pick the file. It opens in this tab; nothing is sent anywhere.
- Pick the position and format. Six positions: top or bottom, left, centre or right. Formats are 1, Page 1, Page 1 of 10 and 1 / 10.
- Add and download. Click Add page numbers, then save the new PDF. Its name ends in
-numbered.
Good to know
- Every page gets a number, including the first. Use Start at to begin from any number, for example when the PDF continues another document.
- “of 10” counts from your start number. A 5-page PDF starting at 6 reads Page 6 of 10 through Page 10 of 10.
- Rotated pages are numbered the right way up, in the position you picked as the page is displayed.
- The rest of the PDF is untouched. Numbers are added as real text in Helvetica, so selectable text, links and images stay as they were.
- Password-protected PDFs can’t be opened. Unlock the PDF first, then add numbers.
Your PDF stays on your device
Most online tools upload your PDF to their servers just to stamp a few numbers on it. Here, the numbers are written into the file inside this browser tab, using the open-source pdf-lib library.
The page’s security policy tells your browser to block uploads, so the document can’t leave your device even by accident. You can check: open your browser’s developer tools, watch the Network tab, and number a file. How InTheTab works
You’ll also see a few small requests to Google Analytics. That’s our visit counter, and it never receives your files. Privacy policy
Questions
Is it safe to number a confidential PDF here?
Yes. The file is read and changed by your own browser and is never uploaded. We never get your files or text: the site has no accounts, and its only analytics, Google Analytics, counts visits without ever seeing what you add here.
Can I skip the cover page?
Not directly: every page is numbered. If the cover must stay blank, split it off, number the rest, then merge the two back together.
Will numbering change the quality of my PDF?
No. Pages aren’t redrawn or compressed. The only change is the small number added to each page.
Do I need to install anything or sign up?
No. It runs in any modern browser on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android or iPhone. It’s free, there’s no sign-up and no watermark is added.
