Are free QR code generators safe?

A free QR code generator is safe when it makes a static code: the information goes straight into the pattern, nothing tracks the scans, and the code works for as long as the destination does. The risk is with dynamic codes, which send every scan through the provider’s server and can stop working when a free trial ends.

Static and dynamic QR codes

Every QR code is a picture of some text. The difference is what that text is.

Dynamic codes have real uses. You can change the destination after printing, and you get scan counts for a campaign. Both depend on that server in the middle, and so do the two catches below.

Is a QR code generator safe? The tracking question

Because each scan of a dynamic code passes through the provider, the provider can record it. The same QR Code Generator page says you can see “when, where, and with what device a scan took place.” That is the feature businesses pay for. It also means a company you never dealt with learns something about each customer who scans your menu or flyer.

A static code can’t do this. Nothing sits between the scan and the destination, so the generator never learns that a scan happened.

Is a free QR code generator safe? The expiry catch

Many “free” QR sites are free trials of a paid plan. As of October 2026, QR Code Generator’s pricing page offers a 14-day free trial, and its article on whether QR codes expire says dynamic codes “deactivate automatically when the trial period finishes” and that “if you stop paying, the links pause.” Its static codes, the same article says, “last forever.”

That is clearly stated, and the codes come back if you upgrade. The trouble is printing a trial code on 500 visiting cards or a shop banner without reading that far. Other providers have their own terms, so check before you print anything made on a trial.

Quick test: scan your code with your phone camera and look at the link before you open it. If it shows your own website or upi://pay, it is static. If it shows a short link on the generator’s domain, it is dynamic and depends on that company.

What you type into a QR generator

A Wi-Fi code contains your network password in plain text. A UPI code contains your UPI ID and name. A contact card has your phone number and email. Some generators build the code image on their server, which means what you typed is sent there first, and some save your codes to an account.

You can see which kind a site is. Open your browser’s Network tab, type into the generator and watch for requests that carry your text. Our guide on checking whether a site uploads your data walks through it.

QR code generator free with no expiration

If you want a code that is free for life, you want a static one. InTheTab’s QR code generator makes only static codes, and it builds them in your browser tab:

The limits come with being static. You can’t edit a code after printing it, and you can’t count scans. If you need scan counts for a website code, add UTM tags to the address and count visits in your own analytics instead.

Is it safe to scan QR codes?

Making a code and scanning a stranger’s code are different risks. The US Federal Trade Commission warns that scammers hide harmful links in QR codes, and advises checking the web address before you open a code found in an unexpected place.

For UPI in India, NPCI’s UPI Safety Shield gives the rule worth remembering: enter your UPI PIN only to send money. You never need to scan a code or enter your PIN to receive money. If you run a shop, check your printed UPI code now and then, because a sticker over it would send payments elsewhere.

Questions

How can I tell if a QR code is static or dynamic?

Scan it with your phone camera and look at the link it shows before you open it. A static code shows the real destination, such as your own website or upi://pay. A dynamic code shows a short link on the generator’s domain.

Do static QR codes ever expire?

No. The information is stored in the pattern itself, so there is no account or subscription to run out. A website code stops working only if the website itself goes away or changes its address.

Can I edit a static QR code after printing it?

No. To change what it does you have to make and print a new code. If you expect a link to change, point the code at a page you control, such as your own website, and change that page instead.

Is it safe to put a UPI QR code on my shop counter?

A static UPI code only contains your UPI ID, name and any amount or note you added, which anyone paying you sees anyway. Check it now and then, because fraudsters sometimes stick their own code over a genuine one.
